21-10-2020 // THEMES AND FIGURES

Image
Inhabitant compound research We looked into the inhabitant compound research that Olha has sent us. We will briefly discuss the information that could be interesting for our project and stand out for us the most. In this research, you will find facts and figures about the 116 Eindhoven neighborhoods, including the Emmasingelkwadrant (Witte Dame). This research is published in June 2019. As can be seen in the graph below, you can see that the majority of the building surface has a residential function (46%). In addition, 23% of the building surface has an office function.    The area has 2,030 inhabitants, which is 0.9% of the population in Eindhoven. As you can see in the graph "Division by origin", more people from abroad live in this area than native Dutch (41.5%). In Eindhoven, the number of native Dutch is considerably higher (65.3%). It is also striking that relatively few families with children live in this neighborhood (8%). In Eindhoven this is 26% of the total popula...

20-10-2020 // MEETINGS, MEETINGS, MEETINGS

Eric, area coordinator Emmasingelkwadrant Olha, strategic advisor on citizen engagement ERIC We started our day with a meeting with Eric. Eric is the area coordinator of the Emmasingelkwadrant, the ‘ears and eyes’ of the area. Eric is also someone we wanted to get to know; he could be very useful for our project. We had not prepared any questions for the conversation with Rolf; the conversation was meant to get to know each other and to see what Rolf had to say about the Emmasingelkwadrant. The intention of the conversation with Eric was the same, only we tried to get some more specific information from him, such as contact details of important stakeholders. Some information Eric shared: See what's already there and where you can hook up. Look where you can make a connection. A number of parties in this area are trying to improve the quality of life in a certain way. It would be a shame if you act as a dependent party, even though you can help each other. Vital Zone is, among other...

19-10-2020 // FOLLOW-UP PROPOSAL

SHARABLE  The city of Eindhoven is growing and has ambitions to transform the Brainport area into an internationally interesting junction with its unique TDK profile. TDK stands for Tech, Design, and Knowledge; a rare combination of core qualities that form the specific skillset of the city. It comes naturally that the area within the central ring of the city evolves with these ambitions. There are a lot of areas in (re)development and the Emmasingelkwadrant is one of them and the municipality drew up a vision document with guidelines for the future of the neighborhood. The most drastic change in the plans is the creation of a central park in the area.     However, there is one big obstacle. When the Philips company left the terrain, most of the ground was sold to real estate developers while the municipality took a much smaller piece of the pie. Nonetheless, the developers still have to follow the...

19-10-2020 // AUTUMN BREAK? NOT FOR US

Follow-up proposal, stakeholder mapping & blog Rolf, communication advisor Early this morning we had a meeting with the two of us. What is the plan for today? We decided to write the follow-up of our proposal, so the sharable, ‘the challenge the challenge’, the connection our project has with TSI and Community Design, and the project estimation. The follow-up can be found under the label ‘Proposal’. In the afternoon we worked on stakeholder mapping and we started a blog (https://communitydesignemmasingelkwadrant.blogspot.com/) for this project. ROLF We had a meeting with Rolf, the communication advisor. The meeting was planned to get to know each other and talk about the Emmasingelkwadrant in combination with our project. According to Rolf is the Emmasingelkwadrant an interesting and diverse area. Some things Rolf mentioned that could be interesting for our project:  First of all: start this project with an open mind and just see how it goes and what you will find out. It is an...

Getting in contact with valuable people from the municipality.  Last Tuesday we defined a work goal, a research question, and our role. We sent this to Monique so she could give feedback. After reading and processing Monique's feedback, we emailed the following people: Eric van Doren (area coordinator), Maurice Delil (project manager Emmasingelkwadrant), Rolf Simons (communication advisor), Sandra de Bres (involved in the Vitalzone project) & Olha Bondarenko (pilot gamification, participation). Below you can find one of the emails we have sent (in Dutch).

13-10-2020 // EXPERIENCING THE EMMASINGELKWADRANT

Visit the Emmasingelkwadrant Deciding structure logbook Deciding structure stakeholder mapping  Today we visited the Emmasingelkwadrant together. Jesse lives in Eindhoven, so he knows the way well and has the necessary contacts (also in this area). What is striking, is that the area is right in the city center, but it is quiet. There are a number of newly built apartments, several restaurants, and a number of other businesses. We visited the part where it mainly concerned: The Lichtplein, the Lichtstraat, and the Victoria Park (not to be confused with the renewed Victoria Park that has yet to be constructed). After our orientation and observation tour, we continued working at a hip restaurant that borders the Victoria Square: Zwartwit.  We have discussed what the structure of the logbook will look like: the date, appropriate titles, and the main points of that day. We also discussed how we are going to map all the stakeholders in the Emmasingelkwadrant. We are going to use the...

12-10-2020 // GETTING CLEARNESS

Image
LAB meeting Meeting Jesper & Monique Meeting Jesse & Amber (Reframe) the challenge Today we discussed our first proposal during the LAB. A number of reactions were given, mainly in relation to our challenge: How can we convert the nuisance in the area around the Lichtplein into something positive in the long term? First of all, what means ‘positive’ in our challenge? If we want to create something positive, will this fit all systems? We have to be critical of ourselves and figure out what this ‘positive’ actually means in our context. Second of all, the word ‘nuisance’ stimulated a number of thoughts. Because who says that there is nuisance? What system is this in and how can we change this system? And maybe even more important: are we even able to change this system in the amount of time we have? These are questions to think about. We got as tip: be realistic. We are not the ones who can change the whole situation in just a few months, especially not in a big area like the Em...

12-10-2020 // 1st PROPOSAL

Image
1st Proposal by Amber Klijn (small + big project) & Jesse Ulrich (big project) We started an internship at the Municipality of Eindhoven in week 39. We will mainly focus on the Emmasingelkwadrant plan area. Our supervisors, also the clients, will be Monique Habraken and Jesper Remmen. They both work at the Municipality of Eindhoven. Monique works as a junior project manager and is involved in, among other things, placemaking. Jesper also works as a project manager. The center of Eindhoven is not easily demarcated. Based on its history, Eindhoven has grown from a small city with a recognizable market function to an international hub where the central facilities of the region can be found. The Emmasingelkwadrant plan area is located in the center of Eindhoven. The Emmasingelkwadrant is bordered by the streets Emmasingel, Willemstraat, St. Antoniusstraat, Elisabethlaan, Vonderweg, and Mathildelaan. The planning area of the Emmasingelkwadrant functions in the city as an isolated encl...
