(Reframe) the challenge
Today we discussed our first proposal during the LAB. A number of reactions were given, mainly in relation to our challenge: How can we convert the nuisance in the area around the Lichtplein into something positive in the long term? First of all, what means ‘positive’ in our challenge? If we want to create something positive, will this fit all systems? We have to be critical of ourselves and figure out what this ‘positive’ actually means in our context. Second of all, the word ‘nuisance’ stimulated a number of thoughts. Because who says that there is nuisance? What system is this in and how can we change this system? And maybe even more important: are we even able to change this system in the amount of time we have? These are questions to think about. We got as tip: be realistic. We are not the ones who can change the whole situation in just a few months, especially not in a big area like the Emmasingelkwadrant. However, we can make a start and have to make sure that our clients know what to expect from us.
About our clients, we had a meeting with them right after the LAB. They are very open-minded and advised us already to do only the things we are coming for; focusing on our Community Design project and directly help them with making the area a more attractive place for the time being. Together with our supervisors, we tried to make the assignment more concrete. To start with the nuisance; this was also a question from ourselves before fellow students from the LAB also mentioned it. We wondered where that nuisance comes from, how much nuisance there is, and whether it has been "investigated"? Jesper, our supervisor, says that there is nuisance, but that it is mainly the bad image that has been created about this neighborhood. It's a mess, it looks like a construction site, and that's why it attracts people who shouldn't be hanging out there. There is not much going on at the moment in this specific area, which is why it attracts the wrong people. The people who live, work or are there for other reasons know that a park is coming and that it will be a nicer place to live, work and spend your free time. However, this is not yet the case and it will take at least another year before the two adjacent buildings on the Lichtplein will be demolished. How do we make it an attractive place until then? The people in the area must be drawn along or stimulated to make something pleasant in the area together. That is what is still missing: something or someone who can bring the 'buzz' to make the area more attractive until the time the building developments start. That's where we could jump in; we can map out all stakeholders and (shared) values in order to look together at what is possible to make this area more attractive. However, It is important that we are not the ones who actually have to implement it; we make the start and the community must eventually take over.
the challenge could be something along the lines of:
How can we transform the image that has been created about the neighborhood into something attractive in the long term (at least one year)?
How can we transform the neighborhood into an attractive place in the long term (at least one year)?
Getting people excited about the future of the neighborhood in the run-up to the start of the planned development projects, with the aim of setting up a lively neighborhood community in a sustainable form to be determined.
We do this by starting to create a positive buzz in the neighborhood in collaboration with ‘BOB’ (bewoners, ondernemers & belanghebbenden --> inhabitants, entrepreneurs & stakeholders). All throughout the project, we will jointly look at how the neighborhood community can continue to exist after we leave the project.
Our role will mainly concern the direction and facilitation of the process and not really the execution of specific organizational tasks. This means that we will focus on bringing the stakeholders together while being a leading ambassador of the creation of a positive buzz in the neighborhood while facilitating this process. We will aim our energy at finding out what it is the stakeholders want and need and how we can unite them in order to spark initiative rather than being on the frontline of the organization of events.
The current challenge we formulated is as follows:
How can we improve the general living experience in the public space of the Emmasingelkwadrant in the run-up to the development projects?
(Hoe kunnen we in aanloop naar de ontwikkelingsprojecten de algemene leef-ervaring verbeteren in de openbare ruimte van het Emmasingelkwadrant?)
