13-12-2020 // FLYER

Last Tuesday, 08-12-20, we had a meeting with Sandra, Rolf, and Eric. In addition to discussing the meeting that has yet to be planned with the project developers and a possible sign that can be placed in the Emmasingelkwadrant, we mostly discussed the content of our flyer. They were actually very enthusiastic about our way of working; we took into account all the feedback that was given, we reflected on the feedback, and explained why we made certain choices. Eventually, we chose our own direction and they appreciated our proactive attitude in that. Maurice, our ‘new’ supervisor, was wondering how we experienced all the different feedback we got. We have received a lot of different feedback. We read everything, filtered everything, and ultimately opted for the content that we supported. Maurice was pleasantly surprised that we responded so well to the ‘municipal way of doing things'. We got the feeling it was some sort of 'test'; how should we react to all these different feedback? After this conversation with Maurice, we know for sure that we have passed this 'test'.

Nevertheless, a number of small things have eventually changed compared to the text structure in blog 01-12-2020. The communication advisor from the municipality found the words 'liveability' and 'represented and connected neighborhood' too vague. That is why we have chosen, in agreement with the municipality, to change these words. We try to communicate clearly and be as transparent as possible. We hope to get this back from the municipality in this way. Because we share our thoughts, we notice that the municipality is also more open towards us. The municipality remains our client and the one who pays for the 1,650 flyers, so we accepted the small changes. In the end, we took into account what we wanted and what the municipality wanted.

The Dutch and English version of the flyer:

*if you cannot read the text on the flyer properly, please let us know*

With this flyer, we start our next project phase. We have been able to sketch a picture of the municipal perspective and the (first) stakeholder perspective on the situation in the Emmasingelkwadrant. We want to reach even more stakeholders in this phase by means of the flyer. On the one hand to create more foundation for mainly the pain points identified by the stakeholders. When we have a meeting with the project developers about improving livability in the Emmasingelkwadrant, we must be able to substantiate that what we say is affirmed by a large number of stakeholders in the area. The municipality wants to have a stronger basis, a stronger stakeholder perspective, to present it to the project developers.

The first conversations with the stakeholders were open conversations for which we had not prepared any questions in advance. In this way, we tried to sketch a good picture of how the stakeholders experience the situation in the Emmasingelkwadrant. These conversations raised many pain points and frustrations. The flyer that we have created, will invite the stakeholders to talk to us. In this phase, we will still give the stakeholders the opportunity to share how they experience the neighborhood, both positively and negatively, but we will focus more on the shared ambition of the stakeholders. What do the stakeholders want? What can they contribute themselves? What are the assets in this neighborhood where we can build on? What is or can be the narrative(s) of this neighborhood? Is there a "spark" in a certain way? And if not, can we as Community Designers be that "spark"? We want to shape the conversations in such a way that stakeholders not only focus on the negative of the neighborhood, but also on the positives and the possibilities. These are questions we want to focus on in the near future.

There are two possible scenarios:

- Scenario one is that not many people will respond to the flyer (about 10 people). If this is the case, we will continue with individual conversations. Later on, we will organize a stakeholder meeting with all the stakeholders we have spoken to.

- Scenario two is that many people will respond (about 50 people). If this is the case, we will organize small stakeholder meetings immediately.

In both scenarios, we will try to form the conversations/meetings around the above questions (shared ambition).
