JIM

Today we had a meeting with Jim from VitalZone. We have already sent him the introduction of our project, the introduction we have sent to everyone who we wanted to talk with. We elaborated a bit together on our project. What he likes about our project is that we want to create something sustainable, that we want to improve the living experience, and that we want to respond to the needs in the neighborhood. These three themes are themes they also want to focus on at VitalZone. The only thing he does not like about our introduction was the word ‘reuring’ (buzz). according to him, you cannot enter this project with the idea of creating a positive buzz; you don't know yet whether buzz is where the need lies. If this buzz does fit the needs of the neighborhood, then it's good.

According to Jim, there should always be a problem for policymakers to focus on. They often focus on the negative of the problem. They emphasize the problem and reality, which is why it is important to map the ‘’real’’  reality. At VitalZone, they focus on both; they take the positive and negative into account in their approach. So they do not only look at the positive but also look at where the urgency lies. The image below shows the components they focus on. ‘Verlies’ are the negative factors they are focussing on, ‘Winst’ are the positive factors they are focussing on.

VitalZone calls their project at the Emmasingelkwadrant "VitalZone Emma". Last year they organized a meeting with stakeholders. On the basis of this meeting they have designed an agenda for the coming period; where does the energy lie? The theme of "feeling at home" emerged as an important theme. During the Dutch Design Week and Glow they already wanted to integrate this in a certain way, but due to the Corona situation, it did not work out. However, the launch of the Sunseeker could be a way to integrate the theme of "feeling at home".

VitalZone has been in contact with the library. The library has many great ideas (which could not be implemented in the summer). De Huiskamer, the youth center located on the Lichtstraat, also has ideas to brighten up the neighborhood. For example, De Huiskamer came up with the idea to build a rotating bench. This bench will be "adopted" every week by a different place, so every week by, for example, a different entrepreneur or organization in the neighborhood. The bench will be built by refugees/asylum seekers who stay in De Huiskamer and must become a place to meet. Improving the physical environment can make it easier to form a community.

Jim mentioned that this bench, or a prototype of the bench, might be interesting for our research to get in touch with people. People in the neighborhood may find other people in the neighborhood "scary". That is why it may be a matter of bringing these people together, starting a conversation, and involving everyone. It doesn't have to be a preconceived plan; you have to show that you are really there for the neighborhood. According to Jim, there is fertile ground for a community in this area.

ANNELIES

We also had a meeting with Annelies. This meeting was mainly dedicated to the Sunseeker. They will test the installation in the first week of November. Neighborhood information about this has been distributed so that the neighborhood is informed. The opening of the Sunseeker will probably be at the end of November. The company behind the Sunseeker is VANTOT. The reason we wanted to talk to Annelies is to find out what the ideas are around the opening and what the other ideas of VANTOT are to brighten up the neighborhood. We wanted to know how we could strengthen each other in a certain way. Unfortunately, Annelies could not tell us much about it. She recommended that we contact Esther. Esther is from VANTOT and can tell us more about what's going on. That's why we sent Esther an email. It was good to have spoken to Annelies and to meet her.
